For my first installment of My Favorite Places we made a spontaneous trip to Shiki Menya, which serves up our personal favorite bowls of ramen in Calgary. Due to the spontanaity of the visit, I didn't get to bring my real camera, but I really can't complain about my trusty iphone so it will have to do!
Shiki Menya makes their own fresh noodles the night before and they are so chewy and delicious. Because of the freshness level they maintain, they only serve up a limited number of bowls a day and you want to get there as soon as possible at lunch time to snag a spot and a gigantic bowl of oily scrumptious ramen. There always seems to be a line so I'd recommend getting there a bit before 11:30, when they open.
Also gangster decor. I'm not really sure how it connects with ramen, but it's cool and I like it. It's a great feel.
Since getting back from Japan, we have an ongoing mission to find ramen that just HITS THAT SPOT, and Shiki Menya has really nailed it so far. Ramen was never something that really grabbed my attention before visiting Japan (figured it was just an asian style chicken noodle soup....) but now it's one of my FAVORITE FOODS. So if you've been wondering what the hype is all about, give this place a shot. I'd be willing to help you take the plunge...
note: make sure to come with an empty stomach and/or take out containers. Bowls are literally the size of your head.
