My sister & mother-in-law and I (with babes in tow) had been planning to get together for breakfast at some point this week. When I realized that the planned meeting time was ALSO the opening day at Buttermilk Fine Waffles, I knew it was meant to be. We cozied up by the hand painted cross stitch wall and tucked into some delicious buttermilk waffles with our toppings of choice.
Buttermilk is the only waffle joint in town and was pioneered by Sam Friley, brother to Billy Friley, owner of Village Ice Cream (who single handedly changed my mindset from, "I'm not really an ice cream fan" to "OMG EVERYONE EAT THIS ICE CREAM"). My sweet tooth has been awakened. They have a simple menu with a handful of set waffle combinations, as well as an a la carte portion for you to build your own waffle creation. To compliment your meal, they serve fresh pressed orange juice and Phil & Sebastian Coffee.
I was a purist and ordered Buttermilk Classic ($13), which was simple and delicious. I got two waffles, but I think if I got any toppings on mine ($1.5-$5 per) I would only get one as they are quite decadent. That being said, the toppings were not overwhelming and perfectly complimented the waffles on which they sat. So often I am turned off of the waffle options at other restaurants because the toppings are so rich and I end up leaving with a belly ache. Here, the specialty waffles come with just a drizzle, a sprinkle, or a single scoop (of Village Ice Cream, of course). No belly aches necessary.
Buttermilk will be offering seasonal combinations, as well as introducing savoury flavours for something a little different. They are open until 11pm to cater to all the cravings! I'm looking forward to going back again to try the newest creations.
Better add this to your weekend plans!
