I have long wanted to create a photo record of our neighbourhood. This community is dear to me, even after just 2.5 years. It's weird, historic, rough around the edges, down to earth, friendly and diverse. Every other person has a dog. Usually a big dog. I see older white people out mowing their lawns. I see women in colourful hijab picking up their children from school. I see Native kids biking down the street. I see Somalian bumper stickers. We rub shoulders with lots of tradespeople, and lots of Vietnamese restaurant owners.
I would really love to capture the look of this place as represented by the people who live here. But that involves taking photos of strangers in your own neighbourhood. Somehow I can do that in foreign countries but find it terrifying to do in my own city. Even just taking photos of random houses and storefronts was pretty intimidating, so that's where I started on my first outing. Having Sloane in the stroller helps me feel and appear less sketchy. Ultimately I want two things out of this project: to really see and love the neighbourhood we live in, and to make some friends along the way.
A kid waved to me, and we made friends with a neighbour named Pam.
